We met in the 1980s when she was a junior faculty member at the Baylor College of Medicine and I was a head and neck surgical fellow across the street at MD Anderson Cancer Center. She has had a wonderful and distinguished career as a teacher, surgeon, department chair, and national leader. Her influence and prominence within our specialty was recently recognized when she was named to the inaugural class of the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery Foundation's Hall of Distinction. She is also a role model in global surgery, having worked with the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center to establish only the second otolaryngology residency in Tanzania.
